Zakynthos is the southernmost island of the Ionian Islands and is situated south of Kefalonia and west of the Peloponnese. It is also called "Zante," a name given by the Romans and Venetians who for centuries occupied the island. They also called the island, "Il Fioro di Levante," meaning "flower of the East." Levante is also the name of the wind that blows in summer from the east and cools the places on the east coast.
Zakynthos town is located at the base of the hill of Bochali and it is at the same time chief town and main port of the island. It offers many interesting things to the visitor such as the famous church of San Dionisio, which keeps the relics of the saint, the numerous museums and the characteristic squares of D. Solomos and Saint Mark. Besides the seafront (marine road) and the small internal streets of the city, there is a very interesting borough around the ruins of the ancient Venetian castle located at the top of the hill of Strani at the back of the city.
